Utah Effective Teaching Standards
Below are a few examples of instructional activities I created:
Example #1
-Rationale: This unit is designed for 3rd graders. It covers:
Health Education
Standard #2: The students will adopt health-promotion and risk-reducing behaviors to prevent substance abuse.
Objective #1: Recognize the health implications of alcohol and tobacco use.
At the beginning of this unit I give brief definitions of words that the students will face in the video on the "Dangers of Alcohol and Tobacco Use." I created a short GoAnimate video for students to watch which explains the negative affects that alcohol and tobacco has on individuals, including health problems, well-being, money, etc. After the students watch the video they are to thoughtfully respond to two short blog questions on our class blog, which help them to apply what they learned in the video.

-Unit #1: The Dangers of Tobacco and Alcohol Use
Please begin by watching a short video about the dangers of tobacco and alcohol consumption. The video is directly below and can be watched from this page, simply by clicking the "go" arrow in the middle of the screen. But first, please look over a few vocabulary words that are important for understanding.
- Stroke: The sudden death of brain cells due to lack of oxygen, caused by blockage of blood flow or rupture of an artery to the brain. Sudden loss of speech, weakness, or paralysis of one side of the body.
- Steatosis/fatty liver: the process describing the abnormal retention of lipids within a cell.
- Fibrosis: causes the body to make thick, sticky mucus, which builds up in the lungs, the digestive system and other parts of the body.
- Cirrhosis: a chronic degenerative disease in which normal liver cells are damaged and are then replaced by scar tissue.
- Heart Disease: an umbrella term for any type of disorder that affects the heart.
Now that we have learned about the dangers of alcohol and tobacco use, please thoughtfully respond to two simple questions on our class blog. Follow this link to be directed to the class blog: Mrs. Parkin's Third Grade Class Blog. Further instructions will be given on the blog.
Example #2
-Rationale: This unit is designed for 3rd graders. It covers:
Strand: RESPOND (3.D.R.)--Students will perceive and analyze artistic work and process. They will interpret intent and meaning and apply criteria
to evaluate artistic work and process.
At the beginning of this unit I give some brief word and picture definitions for concepts they will be facing in the rest of the lesson. I created a PlayPosit video they will then watch that describes one of the seven art elements--lines. Throughout the PlayPosit, there are some questions that pop up for students to answer, which helps them to stay on task and notice the important aspects of the video. This lesson also includes a class blog post for them to describe pictures using the element they have just learned about--helping them to apply what they learned, making the learning deeper and more lasting.

-Unit #2: Analyze the artistic element: lines
Please begin part 2 of today's homework by looking over a few art vocabulary words and then watch this short PlayPosit video. Throughout the video questions will pop up on the left of the screen--they will either be short answer or multiple choice questions. After answering the questions press the "submit" button directly under the question, and then "continue" for the video to go on. The video can be watched directly from this page by simply pressing the white arrow in the middle of the page.
Vocabulary Words:
- Portraying: to represent something by drawing, painting, carving, etc.
- Analyzing: examine in detail the structure of something, typically for purposes of explanation and interpretation.
- Freeform: not conforming to a regular or formal structure or shape.
- Interpret: explain the meaning of, to understand.
Please now follow this link to our class blog where you will see three examples of different art pieces and be asked to describe the lines used. Follow this link by clicking on it and then clicking on the link that pops up underneath in the blue bar Mrs. Parkin's Class Blog. There will be further directions on the blog page.
